About Us

The Chatham Windmill Group began in 2009 when Frank Messina, a member of the Chatham Historical Commission, spearheaded a movement to restore the windmill in time for Chatham’s 300th anniversary in 2012.
In the six decades the windmill has been owned by the town of Chatham, it has undergone several restorations, but by the first decade of the 21st century the mill was in a state of disrepair.  By 2009 the mill had become an under-appreciated and under-utilized relic and was no longer open to the public for tours. Messina formed a group of volunteers (the Chatham Windmill Group) who worked cooperatively with Chatham's Parks and Recreation Dept. to bring the mill back to its former glory and to increase public awareness of one of the town's oldest and most historic buildings.
As a result of the efforts of the Town of Chatham and the Chatham Windmill Group, the windmill is now fully restored and is currently the only windmill on Cape Cod that (on special "Grinding Days") is set in motion and grinds corn - just as it did in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Windmill Group and the Parks and Recreation Dept. continue to work closely together to ensure that the mill remains one of Chatham's enduring treasures.
